History

Roscoe Village Bikes opened in March of 2007. Owners Alex and Lesley Tweedie and their friends and family remade an old storefront into a unique space for bicycle retail and repair. The building was built in 1890 and a tailor shop operated there for many years. Alex and Lesley like the idea of adaptive reuse so they tried to keep as many of the original fixtures as possible. The union-made cabinetry that previously held men’s suits now showcases bikes. The counters and workbenches are original to the storefront. These before and after pictures of the space tell the story well.

Alex and Lesley met at Evanston Township High School in 1996. They married in September 2006. Alex worked in bike shops in Evanston and in Eugene, Oregon where Lesley majored in Spanish and Public Policy at the University of Oregon. Alex, who took his first bike apart and put it back together when he was eight years old, learned from experts the skills needed to repair all types of bicycles. After college, Lesley taught English to nature guides in Mexico and went on to manage the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s Children’s Programs.

Lesley and Alex had been interested in starting their own business so they took some classes at SCORE and put together a business plan. Longtime residents of Roscoe Village, they had a feeling that the neighborhood would be a great place for a bike shop. Alex was walking their dog, Buddy, in November 2006 when he saw the “for rent” sign at 2016 W. Roscoe. The plan was put into action and when the space was ready, Roscoe Village Bikes opened for business.

We have grown and changed over the years but the focus on customer experience and friendly, knowledgeable service remains the same. Our staff are passionate about bikes and are always striving to learn more. We hope to continue to serve the neighborhood for years to come.
